Femme Docs and Kevlar Knights by: A Cullen Wannabe

Bella is a first-year medical intern who was raised by her brother, Emmett, and his friends after their parents died when she was 16. When a night in the ER turns dangerous, can her boys, now members of the best SWAT team in Chicago, save her? Lang/Lem/complete
This fic is in my top five favorite fics that I reread all the time. Bella grows up with all guys not really knowing how to be a girly girl, but that is when being part of her femme doctor friends she can finally get some girl perspective. Edward and Bella try to find their way together when Edward doesn’t want to be a man whore anymore and just love Bella, but Bella has a hard time seeing past his manwhorish ways.

I, of course, picked the authors brain on her amazing story.
Me: What inspiration did you use for Femme Docs and Kevlar Knights?
A_Cullen_Wannabe: I’ve been a diehard fan of the show ER since its inception. In college, I had the largest (a whopping 19 inch) tube tv on the floor. All the girls would congregate in my dorm room for ER night. I think that and the SWAT movies that had come out around that time were the spark for the original plot bunny….well that and I have a major weakness for a hottie in a uniform. 😉

Me: Did you plan the story ahead of time? Did you know it was going to end up being sixty chapters?
A_Cullen_Wannabe: Honestly, it all started with this idea for the hostage situation. I wrote it first, long before I really got going on the story. Next, came the rough strokes of the ending. Then it was all about connecting the first half to the hostage situation, and then the hostage situation to the last chapter. I was really surprised that there weren’t very many necessary changes. It was essentially adding Andy in…he developed out of nowhere. I had NO IDEA when it started that it would end up that long. The story just kept writing itself on and on. It was so much fun, I didn’t want to let it go, which is why I indulged myself with the outtakes in Bella’s Summer Knights. I just couldn’t let them go.

Me: Was it difficult to have Edward injured the way it he was?
A_Cullen_Wannabe: Oh yes…all of the things Bella went through, I felt them myself as I wrote. My heart pounded as I wrote the hostage scenario. I cried when I wrote the scene where she realized he was the injured officer. I felt her pain during the difficult recovery and his distance. I also very much enjoyed when they found their way back into sync again. The emotional lows were always worth the subsequent highs.
Me: What warning or fun fact would you like readers to know about this story?
A_Cullen_Wannabe: Fun fact: A lot of the experiences from Bella’s childhood were pulled from my own teen years living in the area near where I had written her childhood. Her childhood home was modeled after the house a friend of mine and her husband had just purchased right before that in that same area. Also, I created the entire soundtrack as a YouTube playlist and listened to every song over and over the whole time I was writing it. YouTube has since removed the vast majority of those songs.

I still can’t believe how long it has been. My kids were 1 and 4 when I wrote that story. They are now 9 and 12. It gives me such a massive thrill to know that all of these years later you readers are still out there enjoying and reviewing. I’m a full-time teacher now in an inner city elementary school, and there are some days that your reviews are the only smile I manage to find all day long. I appreciate them far more than you can possibly know. Thank you so much for sharing your feelings and letting me know that all my work on this story is still giving people enjoyment!
Me: What advice do you have for fellow writers?
A_Cullen_Wannabe: Don’t give up. My first stories were so, so very rough. But I found so much joy in the writing that I just couldn’t stop. When I became a single mom, and went back to working full time, it became harder and harder to find time to write, but I always found so much fulfillment in writing just for the joy of writing. With my new job, I have even less time than ever. I miss it so much. Thank you for reminding me of that love, and hopefully, someday soon, I can get a chance to start writing and posting again.

Me: Who made the banner for the story?
A_Cullen_Wannabe: When the story was in its prime, I had several awesome, talented readers make me banners. The banner currently used as my icon was created by a reader with the pen name lovexoh.
If you want to read this piece of awesomeness you can read it on FF, or on Stars.

  • FD&KK might well be my most favorite FF story ever! The hostage situation that Bella and Edward found themselves in literally broke my heart and how she went wild with fear to try to save him! It is the part of the story I share with anyone else interested in that particular story and the most gripping, emotional part! I can’t get through the sharing without emotion over Edward reaching out from the wall/cart to touch Bella to let her know he was there, too!
I also lOVED your Bella/Emmett story, too, and so glad you finished it!
I have read and purchased your published books as well and have been looking for you for a few years now!
How are you, how is your life going?
PLMK you got this message, I would love to hear from you!

  • I loved reading this, and every year I re read. Such a touching story. Thank you for creating it
