More on the For the Love of Jasper Contest

The Many Faces of Jasper February is upon us!

That means it’s time for TwiFandomNews’ “For the love of Jasper Contest.”

Give us your Jasper people! He is by far, in this writers opinion, the single most untapped character resource out there. He is a reservoir of complexity that never got the chance to be explored in canon.

Of course non-canon has started a life of its own now that fanfiction has gotten a hold of him. We’ve seen him turned him into a legend the likes that no other character in Twilight comes close to. In short, his persona has been lifted to level of myth for some, a living nightmare to others, the vampire who will forever be sought out for the sole purpose of being the one to end his existence. He has been and will forever be the very face of death. Consider that the Jasper Stefanie Meyer wrote of in the books as nothing more than cannon fodder.

How do you see you see Jasper? As a being striving to do what he believes is morally right, a “man” trying to fit in, a vampire fighting against his very nature and gift, relying on visions of another to guide his decisions. There’s so many riches that can be mined here it’s almost overwhelming. But I’ve taken the Liberty of breaking him down some.

Let’s start by quickly by visiting his cannon beginnings.

Canon Backstory as written by Jamie Mitchell: Jasper Hale (born Jasper Whitlock in 1844, in Houston, Texas) is one of the few surviving vampires of the Southern vampire wars, who later joined the Olympic coven. After becoming the youngest Major in the Confederate Army, Jasper was set upon by the vampire Maria, who proceeded to turn him in 1863 at the age of 19. After the transformation, Jasper aided Maria in her creation of a newborn vampire army, which successfully conquered the feeding grounds of Texas. However, over the next decades, Jasper became tired of this violent and bloodstained life, because he could feel the emotions of those he killed, which eventually became too much for him. Jasper spent many years training newborn vampires and killed them off when they lost their newborn strength. The battles he fought left his body scarred. During this process, he became depressed and sought something better. A newborn named Peter returned after fleeing Maria’s grasp to ask Jasper to join him and his mate, Charlotte. Jasper traveled for a while but still knew there had to be another way of life. In 1948 while in Philadelphia, Jasper ducked into a diner to get out from the rain and came face to face with Alice. She told Jasper of her visions of Carlisle and the two of them joined the Cullen family by 1950. Jasper has the most difficult time with the lifestyle set by the Cullen family. He avoids contact with humans, as he is more tempted than the others to drink from them. Going to school is a difficult task, but he does it for Alice. Jasper traveled with Alice and Bella to Arizona when James was tracking Bella. He fought James and helped kill him. He also instructed the werewolves in how to kill newborns when Victoria created her army. ————

We know he signed up for the Confederate Army at the age of 17. What was he like as a young man? Did he leave someone behind? If so, did he forget about her? It was common in those times to marry quite young, after all.

What about the war and his day to day life? What role did women play in day to day life? What was their food situation like? What if he was human, or lived in a different era?

Give me your Jasper people! How do you see him? He has (thanks to fanfiction) 3 typical personalities:

Jasper Hale: Barely contained vampire, white knuckling every day of his existence and for what? Is it because he’s the newest veggie vamp or is he actually the strongest out of them all? He is an empath after all. What’s the struggle really about? Is he managing their burdens on top of his? Does this factor into his constant battle with his restraint?

Major Jasper Whitlock: Battle hardened warrior who is laying in wait somewhere inside Jasper, just biding his time. Why has he, a leader, taken 2nd fiddle to this Jasper? Does Jasper have him under control or did he recede to the background since his services weren’t “necessary,” in favor of a more peaceful existence? Who controls who? And when? And why?

We know why the Major was created; but what about the legendary “God of War?” Is he too still locked inside somewhere? Remember, anybody that ever tried to kill Jasper, died. He never lost a fight and he was in the hell of the Southern Vampire Wars for decades before Peter and Charlotte pulled him out of that hell.

Does he really belong with Alice? Are there no other possibilities to look at here? Imagine him with Bella or even Edward, if that’s the way your pendulum swings.

Let’s hear it people! It’s “For the Love of Jasper”, so show us that love!
